The strength of a nation’s economy and the vitality of its society depend on the quality of its schools.

So why are so many of them still so bad?

That was the question that I - and three other researchers - wrestled with for over eight years, as we tried to understand how we can improve our schools.

Our findings sparked a controversy that changed the law.

They showed how most schools promote their most charismatic leaders - the Philosophers - reward their worst ones - the Surgeons - and fire their best ones - the Architects - as their results take time to show.

Instead, if we change how our schools are measured, and develop more Architect leaders, then our whole education system - and millions of lives - can be transformed.
